A Brief History of the Window, Part 1
Francis William Edmonds, The Image Pedlar c.1844
As you may be too busy washing your windows during your spring cleaning to read this brief history of glass windows, I have made it a 1min read with cool learning links.
Windows have been around for thousands of years. The ancient Romans were some of the first to use glass in their windows, but it wasn't until the Middle Ages that glass windows became more common in homes and buildings.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, windows became larger and more common in homes, particularly in Europe. In the United States, glass was expensive and scarce, so many homes had small, simple windows.
Paul Gustave Fischer, c.1850
During the Industrial Revolution, advances in glass manufacturing led to larger and clearer panes of glass. This allowed for larger windows that let in more light, and by the mid-1800s, most homes in the United States had at least one large window.
Paul Gustave Fischer, Morning in the Artist's Home at Sofievej, c.1850
In the 20th century, windows became more energy-efficient, with double-pane windows becoming popular in the 1970s. Today, there are various types of energy-efficient windows available, such as low-emissivity (low-e) windows, triple pane windows, and future tech which will help to reduce energy usage and lower utility bills.
